How this network began

It started with one frontliner telling the truth

Dr. David Adem Wasambla, founder of Broken Souls and Healing Network, a Kenyan humanitarian health doctor.
Dr. David Adem Wasambla, founder and chairperson.

Our founder, Dr. David Wasambla, is a Kenyan medical doctor who has spent over a decade working in humanitarian health across eight countries, from epidemic response to conflict settings. Like many who serve, he came home each time carrying injuries that no examination would find, and discovered how little existed anywhere to help responders recover.

So he wrote it down honestly. The book that followed, Broken Souls: Chronicles of a Humanitarian Health Worker, found readers who recognised themselves in it, and those readers became a community. In June 2026 that community became an organisation, governed by a board of seven with backgrounds in medicine, clinical practice, finance, engineering, media and community development.

Our particular emphasis remains the people who serve on the frontline, because that is the need this network was built to answer. Our doors are open to everyone, without discrimination, because trauma and the need for healing are universal human experiences, and the people who reach us are aid workers, students, parents, survivors and people with ordinary jobs carrying extraordinary weight. We are all broken souls in one way or another, and here that is not a confession. It is a welcome.

Why we exist

The wounds nobody sees

In Kenya, most people who need mental health care never receive it. The reasons are familiar: too few professionals, costs that put therapy out of reach, and the quiet verdict that struggling means weakness. So people carry it alone. Aid workers returning from deployment carry it alone. So do nurses, boda riders, students, mothers and the person sitting next to you on the matatu.

We exist to close that gap, and to make asking for help an ordinary thing to do.

Our mission

To provide a dedicated platform and advocacy voice for mental health support and psychosocial well-being for all people, regardless of age, background or social group, who carry the invisible wounds of stress, trauma or emotional suffering. We place particular emphasis on humanitarian workers, emergency responders and frontline workers affected by service in conflict zones, disaster areas and disease outbreak regions, and our services extend equally to non-humanitarian individuals and communities, recognising that trauma and the need for healing are universal human experiences.

Our vision

To create a world where no person, whether a frontline worker carrying the weight of service or an individual navigating the silent struggles of everyday trauma, faces their healing journey alone. Where broken souls of all walks of life are recognised, supported and reintegrated with renewed purpose and dignity.

Our core values

Dignity first. Every individual is treated with unconditional respect, whatever their background or the nature of their struggle. Radical inclusion. Services reach those most excluded. Clinical excellence. Therapeutic services meet international standards and are delivered or supervised by licensed professionals. Community at the centre. Solutions are designed with communities, not imposed upon them. Accountability and transparency. We measure what matters, report honestly and steward every resource with integrity.
